The first client Walking Workshop I did was a one-day trip from San Francisco to Yosemite and back via Amtrak train. Each leg of the trip—the train ride to Modesto, the luxury bus to Yosemite Lodge, the 3 hours in Yosemite Valley, and the return—focused on a different process to meet my client's needs.
I discovered this one-day Yosemite trip for myself first. I like to work in unusual places. They stimulate my thinking. I was able to get a tremendous amount of work done on this trip—and have a three hour walk in Yosemite Valley as well.
I've since expanded this Walking Workshop idea to locations all around the country. And even to some outside the U.S.
People are most open to new ideas and new ways of thinking when they are relaxed. That's why so many people can get great insights while in the shower or while driving a car—or while they are taking a walk.
I've also discovered that often the best ideas come to people when they are having fun, radical idea though that is. So some of the most effective FutureCatalyst Walking Workshops take place in some of the most enjoyable destinations in the world.
FutureCatalyst Walking Workshops include visits to stimulating "Third Places" like special cafes, hotel lobbies, shopping malls, museums and university libraries—even cathedrals on occasion.
Being on different modes of transportation can also stimulate creative thinking so FutureCatalyst Walking Workshops often use trains, ferries and boat rides as part of their program.
